چکیده

The effect of the gap between endplates and wing sections on aerodynamic lift and drag forces was investigated. This was studied in order to determine the maximum gap distance at which flow can still be considered two-dimensional, and tip effects can be neglected. A non-dimensional distance, λ, was defined as the ratio of gap distance, d, to laminar boundary layer thickness, δt,laminar , over the endplate. Force balance measurements were taken for a NACA0012 wing section placed between two endplates at the Dryden Wind Tunnel facility. λ was varied for desired values of λ = {0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0} and data was taken at two different desired Reynolds numbers,Re = 50k & 100k for angles-of-attack, −10◦ ≤ α ≤ 10◦. Problems were encountered with the test apparatus and imperfections were noticed on the wing surface. However, considering a single, reliable data set atRe = 50k, the critical non-dimensional gap distance was determined to be λcritical = 1.0± 0.1, for the given airfoil. Given the widespread implications of such an investigation to wind tunnel testing, further experimentation is required.

A postnatal change in the immunological properties of the acetylcholine receptor at rat muscle endplates.

We have used a myasthenic serum that in adult rat muscle is specific for acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) in the extra-junctional membrane to characterize the AChRs at developing endplates. Immunocytochemical experiments show that AChRs at endplates in the rat diaphragm bind the myasthenic antibodies during the first week after birth but lose their reactivity during the second and third postnata...

Transmitter release differs at snake twitch and tonic endplates during potassium-induced nerve terminal depolarization.

Twitch and tonic muscle fibers of snake skeletal muscle differ in their synpatic as well as mechanical properties. These experiments were aimed at detemining the basis of the difference in vesicular release properties of nerve terminals at twitch and tonic endplates. Miniature endplate currents (MEPCs) were recorded from voltage-clamped garter snake muscle fibers depolarized by high K+ in eithe...

Expression of acetylcholine receptor isoforms at extraocular muscle endplates.

PURPOSE To determine the expression of fetal and adult acetylcholine receptor (AChR) isoforms among extraocular muscle (EOM) en plaque and en grappe endplates. METHODS Antibodies against peptide fragments of the gamma- and epsilon-subunits of the fetal and adult AChRs and alpha-bungarotoxin were used in immunofluorescence experiments to stain rat neonatal leg, adult diaphragm, and extraocular...

Gating properties of acetylcholine receptors at developing rat endplates.

The gating properties of acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) change during the development of rat soleus endplates. During the first 3 weeks after birth, the apparent mean channel open time (tau) decreases severalfold and the single-channel conductance (gamma) increases 50%. To better understand this phenomenon, we used a combination of noise analysis, analysis of miniature endplate currents (MEPCs...

Neonatal partial denervation results in nodal but not terminal sprouting and a decrease in efficacy of remaining neuromuscular junctions in rat soleus muscle.

Mature motoneurons respond to partial denervation of their target muscle by sprouting to reinnervate denervated fibers, thus maintaining muscle strength in the face of motoneuronal loss caused by injury or disease. Neonatal motoneurons, however, do not expand to innervate more muscle fibers. The present work seeks to understand this developmental change in motoneuron response to partial denerva...
